Weh Island is a small active volcanic island with a fringe of magical beaches, colorful coral and rich marine life, just 45 minutes by speedboat from the town of Gateway Banda Aceh.

I find my way Casa Nemo Bungalow Resort & Spa in Sumur Tiga beach and at the end of the afternoon I relax in my hammock comfortable bungalow, gazing at the Andaman Sea. Draped in the green forests, Weh full of secrets delights. Apart from diving, underwater hot springs, beautiful waterfalls and mountain trails waiting to be discovered.

I spent my first day exploring the beautiful bays and beaches Weh motorcycle - the best way to cruise around and explore the island . The highlight of the day was the big hit zero, the place made famous to mark the beginning of physical Indonesia. A zero up like a football post is positioned at the westernmost point of Weh, well appointed Kilometer Zero. It makes it a popular meeting point for locals and foreigners to 18 hours, when the sun falls on the edge of Indonesia.

I ordered a drink at warung and talked to the locals, who told me there is a place in Papua marking the point of eastern Indonesia. A lively discussion developed among the customers warung: what was the exact number written on the sign of one kilometer at the eastern end of the chain of islands in Indonesia? Most agreed was about 5300 km, but nobody really knew. Most people do not venture far from the island of Weh.

Suddenly I heard the hum of a machine and shuffling papers. The owner of the store had a smart small business side: spit on a printer certificates were bright yellow with beautiful golden letters. Each was individually numbered and signed by the mayor of Sabang (the main port city on the island of Weh). How could I resist? I asked for a souvenir, happy to see on inspection, I was visitor number 91743.

Next, a visit to explore the island to discover what lies beneath the waters of diamond littered Weh. I discovered there were 20 dive sites around the island, with Gapang beach and its most popular reef.

The marine life is prolific, and Marjan van der Burg, owner of Lumba Lumba Diving Centre, explained that local people keep the sea gardens protected traditional way. "Diving keeps the economy afloat here," she said.

"Each village takes responsibility to protect their local patch of the marine environment. If a boat just outside the territory of a village and engaging in any sort of destructive fishing practices, such as crushing coral or illegal dynamite blasting, the village takes immediate action. By law, they can confiscate the offender boat for a week and fined. If the fisherman wounded a second time, they can burn the boat. "This local social village structure strong guard offenders away. According to van der Burg, resulting wonderfully prolific marine life and pristine coral seabed.
