Discovering the land and treats under water on a small resort island off the coast of West Sumatra.

Why do we travel? Is it in the pursuit of checking many places on your map as possible? Or maybe the self-discovery trip is what keeps you going up and down planes, trains and automobiles, crossing the unknown. Living in Indonesia comes with its advantages and disadvantages (as for the whole country), but one of its many positive points is that there are so many exotic places to explore, and although the journey is not always easy, the end result is worth it. I discovered this recently with a trip to the island of Cubadak located just off the coast of West Sumatra.

The history of Sumatra is rich and complex. Archaeological evidence suggests that Sumatra was the gateway for migrating tribes of Southeast Asia continent, with hunter-gatherers living along the Strait of Melaka there are about 13,000 years. This popular trade route on the east coast archipelago open to China, India and the world, exposing the popular ideas of the time, such as Islam.

Throughout the colonial era, Sumatra saw almost every foreign power game demand in its abundant resources: the Dutch set up camp in the port of West Sumatra Padang; the British ruled in Bengkulu; American traders have monopolized the export of pepper Aceh; and exploited the Chinese tin reserves on the islands of Bangka and Belitung.

Rich in heritage, this region is home to about 4 million people Minangkabau, one of the last people to have a matrilineal culture, which directly contrasts the dominant religion of the island of Islam. the natural beauty of this area is also wonderful, with a green countryside, meandering rivers without end, and mini waterfalls that dot the roadside.

Getting to the island Cubadak involves first fly to Padang Minangkabau International Airport, a flight from Jakarta 1 hour and 20 minutes. The flight is the easiest part of the trip, however, we found the drive 3.5 hours proceeded, passing on the hillside windy roads through the forests to reach the island, just 20 km south of the city of Padang. Usually, this player would take 3 hours, or even 2.5 if you are lucky, we were not - as we experienced several delays on two constructions of bridges, and a massive traffic jam in the city of Padang. Once reached the port of Corocok Tarusan, we were taken on a speedboat for a 10 minute ride, to finally arrive at this small resort where time seems to stand still.

Cubadak Island is unique because it boasts clear blue waters on one side and lush green forest ideal for hikers and bird-spotters on the other

the beach is also very beautiful, with white sand stretching for about 1 km. - Perfect to relax and read a good book. But do not expect butlers beachfront or five-star luxury, as this island has its own way, more relaxed to do things.

opened it 23 years ago by Nanni Casalegno, an Italian man who sadly died in 2014, the "village" was exploited by the very friendly Dominique and her husband, Marco (both French) for last 10 years. The island still has that atmosphere of the 0s, with wooden paneled rooms reminiscent of those that you can find along the west and south coast of Java. I doubt much has changed since its opening there all these years.

Bungalows at Cubadak Paradiso Village

Bungalows Cubadak Paradiso Village

With a total of 12 bungalows on the island, including a family unit that can be rented as one, or divided into two, customers can choose to stay on the land or engage in a water bungalow, suitable for honeymooners. The wooden bungalows are what I would describe as rustic chic, situated on the beach and come with a bathroom, a living room and a double bed on the mezzanine lounge downstairs. Other amenities include a mini bar, filled with great Bintangs and soft drinks, hot water and the added benefit of drinking tap water, which comes directly from a natural source on the island. There is no air conditioning here, so if you are prone to feel the heat, adjust the night on the high ceiling fan. The rooms are perfectly situated to enjoy the sound of cicadas and birds singing in the forest behind.

The big jump

The island is very well suited for divers seeking to explore a lesser known region, and the local government are actually planning on marketing this as the next Raja Ampat. Although I do not think it is quite comparable to what Raja Ampat diving Mecca of the world, has to offer, it is definitely not want to try. With several dive sites within easy reach, including a reef, many pinnacles and even a wreck, there's lots to see underwater -. Although visibility was only about 5-7 meters when we visited

When not diving, we spent hours day frolicking in the clear water, lounging around on sun beds while enjoying the sound of thunder noises coming from the menacing clouds, distant. Although Cubadak is not exactly isolated - there is a visible water village in the distance -. You always feel like you are 100 miles from nowhere

In the evening, guests converged and sought shelter against the monsoon rains at the bar, located above water. Here you can enjoy a tea or a soft drink (wines are even supplied at fair prices), while enjoying a jam on one of several guitar Marco. Wi-Fi is available, too.

Cubadak Paradiso Village by Angela Richardson All meals on the island are taken together, so if you do not want to socialize, this may not be your scene. Breakfast is served from 7.30-11am, lunch at 13:30 and dinner not before 20 hours. The food is absolutely delicious, and the bees in the kitchen can cook gluten-free and vegetarian meals as well. Fresh fish is taken and shared every day, as we saw when the fisherman of the island has a freshly caught red snapper to feed the hungry guests - and the local dog

If you like hiking, behind the station is great. hill, wrapped in the forest. There is a path that takes you up in about 45 minutes - a spectacular place to take pictures. This path is perfect for identifying birds including the colorful kingfisher.

If you are a nature lover and enjoy the thrill of the hunt, you should put Cubadak Paradiso Village on your travel list. We had a huge eight hours to return to Jakarta, because of traffic disruptions and flight delays, I suggest you stay a minimum of three nights to relax and enjoy what the island has to offer really.
