Hope for the Children of Sumbawa

Hope for children Sumbawa

For several years, 33 years, Carlos Ferrandiz worked as a lawyer in Spain, but in 2010 he decided to quit his job and living in Indonesia. Meanwhile, he became completely devoted to the Harapan project, a foundation he created to help the community Hu'u, Sumbawa cover basic survival needs in nutrition and access to clean water , improve health, education and basic infrastructure.

Ferrandiz took time to accompany a young boy from the island of Sumbawa in Bali for ear surgery, and spoke to Indonesia Expat about his previous life as an lawyer working hard, who left his job, family and friends to go to a village in the remote jungle. Upon arrival in Indonesia, Carlos soon learned that the most important thing in life was love.

"I believe that education is the basis of all social change. It is the key to understanding and solving all the problems of this world, to give us the knowledge to analyze each situation and find the good solution. "

Carlos owes much to his parents who taught him the importance of helping others, taking the age of six years to help with humanitarian work, especially in soups Popular and the houses of the physically and mentally disabled. Consequently, Carlos decided to change the course of his life and finally stop thinking about money and its own interests. According to Carlos, there is nothing in the world that can make him happier than making a child smile.

"In 06, I made my first trip to Indonesia. After a few weeks I decided to visit Bali Sumbawa, trying to find a more quiet area. When a child approached me, wanting to communicate, I asked him if he spoke English, and he said he only spoke a few words. This surprised me a lot because it was the only language in the limited tourism industry that provides economic resource. So I say to the boy Sumbawa I was going to teach him English. "

The next day, Carlos went to the meeting place with a blackboard, he had borrowed from one of the few hotels that existed in the region and some books to teach English. To his surprise, Carlos is the population of the entire village had turned up, with 150 children, parents and even grandparents. Dazzled by their desire to learn and have witnessed their poor living conditions, Carlos decided his life must change. And at that time, the Harapan project was born.

Back in Spain, Carlos decided to form his NGO and then move to the island of Sumbawa and devote his life to helping the people of Hu'u. When Carlos arrived in Sumbawa there seven years, a situation that worried him was the large number of children and adults who could not read and write.

"Many children do not attend school regularly because they were inappropriate productive tasks for their age, such as agriculture and collection of algae. I am also shocked at the low level education at school and realized that access to education for families was almost nonexistent. "

Created in 2010, the Harapan project works with communities in the development of their welfare and the promotion of peace and liberty, with a deep respect for their cultures, beliefs and customs. Volunteers teach every afternoon in the four villages of the district Hu'u, and children learn to read and write English, mathematics, geography, and science, as well as other activities educational for children and adults.

"Education is fundamental to improving living conditions. By providing an appropriate education for the population, we can solve every problem. For example, by providing information on sanitation, we can eliminate most diseases. Similarly, education about the exploitation of natural resources can generate work opportunities and new income for families. "

Many students admire surfer and successful pro model Hairil 'Oney Anwar. The 20-year-old started riding the waves on a surfboard snapped in his village of Lakey Peak. Anwar made so he met surfers who travel by speaking a good English. When Oney joined Rip Curl team in 03, he was already looking to become a world class surfer at the age of 10. Oney was living in Queensland, Australia since 07 within the framework of international Grommet Rip Curl development Program, and a graduate of Palm Beach Currumbin high.

"Oney Anwar is the idol of all children Hu'u. Oney made his dream a reality and showed all the children a better future is possible if you work hard. It is the many opportunities to work "dream come true" for each of the children in this area. "

The local population has not Hu'u. People work the land (rice or corn) and collect seaweed for cosmetic companies that sell to intermediaries at a ridiculous price. The average monthly income for a family is about 0 or 300 000 Rupiah. the weak economic situation prevents people from seeking medical treatment and medicines.

"Last December 1st huge cyclone hit Sumbawa. There were floods everywhere and people were isolated. Nangadoro town suffered serious damage to their school building, leaving the dangerous structure. We worked with the Department of Education and Hu'u Rotary Seminyak, Bali, to cover all reconstruction costs. "
