Most Jakarta is abreast of new developments and expanding suburbs, but look north and you'll find Kota Tua or "Old Town" which was where the original city of Batavia began hundreds of years. Pak Luki, how did you get involved in this career path?

I'm quite a recent addition to PT Pembangunan Kota Tua, who joined the team as director of the site in November. I am currently in charge of all construction phases of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kota Tua in North Jakarta.

Can you share a bit about the history of Kota Tua with us?

I'm not the best historian, but I'll try! Kota Tua was the first city that was built by the East India Company (VOC) when Jan Pieterszoon Coen was the Governor General. In 1619, the Dutch were able to regain control of the city that had been taken over by the British when they were temporarily left in shipping, but a fire destroyed much of the city. Coen rebuilt the fort and the city, and in 1621 he renamed the city Batavia, capital of the Dutch East Indies.

PT Pembangunan Kota Tua was launched in late 2013 by a consortium of eight companies. Can you share with us who are the founders and that the common vision?

This is Jababeka, Intiland, Agung Pomodoro earth, PT Pembangunan Jaya, Plaza Indonesia, Mr. Setyo Dharmono (DDI), and Lin Chi Wei (LCW). Kota Tua as a tourist destination will be united with the buffer zone of Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands), which means having a tourist destination and business district will be achieved. The vision is to create history as the soul of the city.

The original plans from 2013 were revitalize Fatahillah Museum, and make the post office Fatahillah a reception center and a museum of contemporary art. Have these plans been achieved?
I am pleased to say that these plans were achieved. When I was engaged in office Fatahillah Museum Fatahillah and Post, the museum of contemporary art was already in operation.

We face all kinds of challenges. For example, the construction methods, research, and try to think like the original architects of the buildings that lived hundreds of years ago.

What technical skills should I possess to restore the buildings hundreds of years old?

we have enough behind 'flight hours' us. Skills and experience necessary to remove a revitalization project of this nature includes architectural and structural experiment support chemical and mechanical equipment - power tools and equipment knowledge. We must also have an understanding of history, urban planning, laws, government policies, budgets, and, of course, health and safety at work. This is very important for the safety of all our workers.

Why do you think preserving the history of the city is so important?

We have a slogan: history is still in gestation. I believe that a city without history is a soulless.

What challenges do local residents are faced with your revitalization?

Sometimes it can take many years for the results to come. Everyone has their own expectations, but once completed, the old city will promote a great community for many generations to come. People want to do the best environment for their son, daughters, parents or grandparents to live, to achieve a good quality of life. We work hard to socialize the developments in the local community so that they understand our plans and how they will be received in the future.
